I have gotten some conflicting answers online. I already have a 2x4 kit of ddr4 ram. I was wondering if i needed to get rid of that kit to upgrade or if I can get another 2x4 kit if I have four ram slots on my mobo. Any help?

First, check your motherboard's memory QVL (qualified vendor's list) to see if your model and sizes of memory modules are on it. If they are not, it doesn't mean they will not work. It only means the motherboard maker didn't test that specific setup. Second, you are almost always better off going with a 2x instead of 4x set of memory modules on a non-X series Intel chipset. The reason for that is because of Intel's crappy memory controller on H and Z series motherboards. This is most crucial when overclocking which you do not mention.

Also just a note: the more information you give us about your system and question/problem, the better your answers will be.
not recommended but worth trying, generally you don’t have much issue if the speeds and the timings are the same, if you have a motherboard that allows memory tweaking, the chance of making it work is high. I would say speed is the key here, 2133 or 2400 standard spec is fine for most rams, however if you have two sets of ram with different xmp. You might have to manually tune them in the uefi.
