Is this cooler good enough for my cpu?

Solution
i7-8700K takes considerable cooling even at stock.
If your hyper212 is keeping you to 85c. under load you are ok.
If the temperature at idle is 10-15c. over ambient, that is ok.
The 8700K will throttle or shut down if it detects a dangerous temperature.
That is about 100c.

What is your case and fan setup?
One thing to check is that you have sufficient front air intake for the cooler to do its job.
Two 120/140mm fans should be all you need for the 8700k and a top graphics card.
cooler selection depends on your use for pc,

normal use (gaming, cad) uses about 50 - 100w of power, which is fine for the cooler

however , if your cpu is rendering all the time, it can draw 150w + into cpu, that case, i would suggest you to get a AIO or those very beefy air cooler.

evo has a 150w tdp.

the cpu is only at torture test would exceed this limit.

depends on the game, generally, games are not that cpu intensive, and most of the work are carried out by the graphic card.

if you play game all day, it's still going to use roughly 50-100w, so your cooler should be okay.

that’s weird because my cpu seems to reach around 50+ on a few games like overwatch which shuts off my pc. i found a fix which requires me to use only 60% of my cpu to not hard crash but i get worse fps in games

what cpu do you have?

if you are referring to your 8700k,
what's your full system spec and what fan are you using it currently.

there are many thing that could cause instability, temperature is just 1 of them.

few that i can think of
1. poor quality psu, high load causes large voltage ripples hence tripping internal protection.
2. vrm overheatting
3. unstable overclock on the cpu,
...
