So I recently bought a set of hardware for what's probably an unusual configuration - a laptop from Eluktronics that allows for installation of a desktop CPU plus additional storage and memory options. (I posted the hardware / software details at the bottom of this post.)
Basic problem: I have to load the BIOS every time I boot the computer after a full shutdown, or the computer will fail to read the SSD to boot. ***Edit: Also can't put my computer on standby / sleep or otherwise it will crash and reboot.
Initially I couldn't get the BIOS to read the PCIe NVME SSD so that I could boot a USB disk and install WinPro 10 on the SSD. After researching this site and google for hours, I played around with the BIOS and changing the SATA Mode from AHCI to Intel RST Premium and rebooting, the SSD showed up but still wouldn't boot (error message: "Reboot and select proper boot device"). Changed the mode back to AHCI; BIOS wouldn't recognize. Then I swapped the PCIe slot the SSD's sitting in and repeated the steps above, and afterwards the BIOS recognized the SSD, and I installed Windows 10 Pro. w00t, happy day right? Download Steam, marvel at spiffy graphics, gets my old laptop ready to retire.
So then I boot up the laptop this morning and same error I was getting before: "Reboot and select proper boot device"). Did the same BIOS dance back and forth, and suddenly the SSD's back. In fact, after about ten tests, all I have to do is load the BIOS and change zero settings, and Windows will boot. This is a workaround but an unnecessary and annoying workaround, plus I'm concerned I'm causing unforeseen problems in the future.
I managed to get the manual from Eluktronics, and I noted the specifications below (see the imgur links below). I realized I have a mismatch (I have ONE SSD that's an M.2 PCIe Gen3 x2 NVMe, instead of a PCIe Gen3 x4).
Any suggestions? Did I screw up the SSD purchase and should have bought a Gen3 x4? Thank you greatly for your guys' time; I've been a lurker for many years, and y'all always have great insights on computer issues which gets me the solution I need. Today is the first time I've ever had to post.
