FX 8300 a worthy upgrade from OC'd phenom?

My current cpu is the phenom ii x4 945 with an overclock to 3.75Ghz. I'm ready for a pc upgrade but it will still be under budget and will have to be a few parts at a time since I'm 16 and not making much money. Hoping for an end result of a gtx 970 with an i5 8400, and wondering if an fx 8300 would be a good match for the 970 in the mean time. Would it be better to skip over the 8300 entirely? Would it provide better gaming than my phenom? I would most likely be abusing it with an overclock since I wouldn't have it for too long (most likely 1-3 months). If the chip turns out to get me respectable frames with medium high settings on my favorite titles, I could hold off on the upgrade until needed.

Appreciate any help, thanks! :)

Games I will be playing most: GTA V, Rainbow Six Siege, Dead by Daylight

Current Setup:
CPU - Phenom ii x4 945 @ 3.75GHz
RAM - 8GB DDR3 1600
MOBO - Gigabyte GA-78LMT-S2P Rev 5
GPU - MSI GT 1030 2GH LP OC
PSU - a generic 350W Dell (replacing with CXM 550W ASAP)

Solution

Hard to say, still less than GT 970 could need but processor itself would be from 50 to 100% better by benchmarks. That doesn't always translate in games but surely better than now.

If I may give you my honest opinion, I would rather recommend you to start planing a big overhaul and go directly to Ryzen or CoffeeLake platform rather than wasting your money on already long obsolete path.
Keep your money for now.

note: 350W PSU is not enough for GTX970.

Gotchya. In terms of performance, how much better would the FX 8370e perform vs my phenom?

Thanks for your input. I am getting the ryzen 1600 or the i5 8400 definitely, but just in a couple months or so. I was just wondering if the 80 dollars spent now would be a worthy investment to carry me through the rest of the summer until I pick up one of those newer chips, unless the phenom has relatively the same performance as the fx. Also next week I am purchasing the corsair CXM 550W to accommodate for the gtx 970.

Alrighty. I will pair the 970 with my phenom and see how harsh the bottleneck is and if needed I will put an 8300 in there. Thank you
