This happens a few times a day and it can last for a few minutes or it can last for hours. We have 100mbps internet and a lot of the time it grinds to a halt and I have no idea why it's very inconsistent. The router is on the same floor in a room like 10 metres away from me.

I have the Bell Home Hub 2000 router.

If you're on a computer, try running an ethernet cable from your router to your computer. If that doesn't fix the problem, more than likely it's just your ISP and not a problem on your end. Though that may not be the case. There are lots of factors that could affect you in this way.

I forgot why but the technician who installed our router said that it can't be moved to a different location for some reason, so I can't get an ethernet cable from it to my computer. It's in a different room..

I do that every time. Sometimes it works and the internet goes back to normal, but sometimes it still stays slow..

Like if I'm playing a game and I get over 1000 ping all of a sudden, after I reset my router sometimes it goes back to normal and sometimes it stays very high.

I'm pretty sure everything is up-to-date. I don't know what else I could update..

I looked everywhere I don't see a firmware update option :/

Hmm, did you get that modem from your ISP?

It's probably because you have DSL which uses a DSL cable and plugs into an old LAN-line phone outlet. If you have any laptops, try using an ethernet to do what I said. Or try moving your desktop temporarily. If not, you can try a hard reset. Otherwise I'd call your ISP and talk to them about it. It could be a number of issues, from your device you are receiving the internet on, to the modem or router itself, to just software problems, to even just the fact that your desktop is far away from the router and isn't getting a good signal.

Is there a better, more modern connection type I could try looking into that I could replace it with?

You'd have to talk to your ISP. Most home internet services are DSL or cable internet which most likely runs off your cable TV and comes in a bundled package. It really depends on your budget and your ISP. Talk to them, if you DO have DSL right now, you can't change it without contacting your ISP and seeing maybe if you could get cable internet. Depending on the package they offer you, your service could be better or worse.

As everyone else has stated, the issue is most likely the ISP. I wouldn't rule out bad firmware or an old modem though. First course of action is to definitely call your ISP, discuss your internet package and maybe see if they can replace the modem. This would likely hit the nail on the head.
