Hi, I have been having a problem with my PC for a couple of months, I get these really bad frame drops for about 10-20 seconds and then my game goes back to running fine.

I have a gtx 1080ti paired with an AMD fx-8350, I know that CPU is not good to pair with it but i am trying to save up money to upgrade my CPU, motherboard and ram but it costs too much at the moment

It never lagged this bad with the CPU, I only got lower frames than most people with a 1080ti but now in most games i just get this really unplayable lag and i want to know if there is something I can do to fix it. Because it will be a few months before I can even think of upgrading

Here is an example of the lag and how it goes back to normal afterwards
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tTB5lss2T64

Usually it isn't this bad, I would get about 20-40 frames most times. But this is it at an extreme level, (Note, Was on Fortnite with only one other player) But happens in every game I play

Also, This is the cpu usage and gpu usage https://i.imgur.com/s3YX6Kw.png
I don't fully understand how to tell whats going on

Computer Specs
MOBO: MSI Gaming 990FXA-GAMING
CPU: AMD FX(tm)-8350 Eight-Core Processor. OC @ 4.20 GHz
COOLER: Corsair - H75 54.0 CFM Liquid CPU Cooler
RAM: 16 GB (8gb because stopped booting with 16gb)
GPU: ASUS ROG STRIX GEFORCE GTX 1080 TI OC EDITION
PSU: Cooler Master - 750W 80+ Gold Certified Fully-Modular ATX Power Supply
CASE: NZXT S340 Elite - White

My build is similar in terms of CPU (though at 4.5Ghz), RAM, and mobo (same chipset but older) and I have an MSI 1080. I, too, get frame drops occasionally but that's largely because there's more work being put onto the CPU than on the GPU. What resolution are you playing at? Is Fortnite all you play or are there others where you have issues?

If you're not playing at a resolution above 1080p, you (and me) will suffer issues due to the GPU having to wait on the CPU to do work when it should be the other way around.

I play Fortnite on 1080p with 4k 3d resolution, If i were to lower it to fully 1080p it would have a little bit lower fps
I play a lot of games on my pc and most tripple a titles get fps drops like this aswell. Even in csgo, It goes down to 30fps and makes my mouse movement weird.
I can't figure out how to fix this and its killing me. I cant buy a new cpu because it'll cost too much

Check Task Manager for high usage of CPU & Memory. Also check the RAM to see if your frequency is correct and that all of your RAM is showing up.

Also it may be time to clean up applications running in the background. Go to Startup in Task Manager and disable nonessential applications with medium and high impact on start up (plus any applications not used every few days). Not that this doesn't delete them, it just stops them from running constantly.

I understand. My build is 6+ years old now and with the DX12 improvements and more games being programmed to utilize additional cores, it still works pretty well... but I, too, want to build a new rig but have my own issues.

That said, I don't see how dropping your resolution down to regular 1080p would hurt you as much as you make it sound. Are you using V-Sync? That could be part of the issue. How much stuff do you have running in the background when you're playing? I can't speak to the optimization of Fortnite as I don't play but I thought it was pretty decent. I'll have to defer to someone else on that.

Yeah man i have already done all that stuff, Found out that my motherboard had the wrong instructions on where to put the ram in so it was running single channel for like 8 months haha. But it didnt fix it
I only have app's like Razer, Ccleaner, Discord, AVG and msi motherboard drivers on start up

I dont run V-Sync on any game, Have a 144hz monitor.
Also usually have chrome open but even with it closed with task manager it still lags.
And people with lower gpu's can get over constant 300fps on it whilst streaming
(Also i appreciate you trying to help me understand this, I am a noob when it comes to troubleshooting haha)

I tend to have both cpu and gpu fans on 100% to make sure nothing is going to overheat,
Although i think my cpu gets really hot even though i have liquid cooling.
The highest ive seen it was 60-70 degrees for the cpu
And never had a problem with the gpu
But in general i think it is low 40-50 degrees for both

I only asked about the V-Sync because I'd rather not make assumptions about what you are or are not doing or how you have things set up. As far as streaming, that could be because they're using newer CPUs that we are. Are all your drivers up to date?

I was playing "The awesome adventures of Captain Spirit" a week ago (The game isnt even that demanding)(Akso single player)
And usually was getting 100+fps but it would drop to 20fps about 5 times in an hour of playing

Since you're playing online based games... could it be something with your network suffering lag spikes? When's the last time you rebooted your router? I'm just trying to cover all the bases here, you know? I appreciate Terry trying to do the same.

Router restarts every night usually. Also happens in single player games

My overclock is active right now, I have tried to overclock it even more to 4.5ghz But it kept blue screening because i probably didnt do it right. So tried it with 4.00ghz and it still lagged so i put it back to 4.20ghz

I tried to reinstall windows but it wouldn't let me since i got my windows 10 when it was free. It asked me to put in a disk or memory stick with the key on it or something but i didnt get one

If you upgraded to Windows 10 during the free upgrade period, the key on the WIN 7 or WIN 8 is still active. You can also download a Windows 10 ISO to install it.

Thanks for the tip, I will try to download that.
Just wondering, I dont have the windows 7 box that i was using before the upgrade. Is the product key that i find in the properties of "this pc" the one that i use?

Thank you guys, I will let you know how it goes :D

I don't know if the operating system key is stored on the PC or not. I would think not. Sometimes the key is applied to the case as well.
