I have never had a computer that supported M.2 until just a few days ago so my knowledge is limited on the subject. I got my hands on a Alienware 15 r4 while on sale but think I would like to add some more storage for games and other applications (1xM.2 2280 and 1xM.2 2242). I don't have a huge understanding of this and hope its possible but I was thinking about ordering a Toshiba M.2 2242 240GB or 120GB (here is the 240GB one https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820168038&ignorebbr=1) to use it for linix (maybe running in virtual box), the M.2 2242 wont be used for anything else so leaning more towards the 120GB (unlike the M.2 2280 that I plan to use for games). My issue is that the slot looks different then the one in my laptop as seen in the picture (http://i1376.photobucket.com/albums/ah17/CTRuppert/20180708_205208_zpsvwhikdcu.jpg).

Now to the question, will the Toshiba M.2 work in the slot even though the teeth are different? Below is the infromation about the 2242 slot from the manual just incase someone needs it.

One M.2 2242 solid-state drive • SATA AHCI 6 Gbps • PCIe NVMe up to 32 Gbps
Up to 1 TB

Thanks and looking forward to any information I may receive and I do plan to order the Toshiba by 7/13/2018.

Sorry took me awhile to get back, just got off work. Thanks for some of those links, the laptop came with a 128gb m.2 for the OS (not in the original picture) and at the moment thinking about leaving it for the main OS. So at the moment I only have 1 M.2 2242 and 2280 open to be used. I was originally just going to add just a single M.2 2280 and use some of the 1tb HHD for my virtual box for the Linux OS but then I saw the prices for a 2242 and I figured it wouldn't hurt me that much to just add it along side my other storage devices for Linux. I might upgrade my 128gb to a higher drive but at the moment Ill stick to the 128gb M.2 2280 (for main OS), 1Tb HHD (for anything not needing speed), 512gb M.2 2280 (for things I would like speed) and 128 or 256gb M.2 2242 (for Linux). This is my planned loadout I was going for to use with my laptop.

So the M.2 I have linked for the Toshiba M.2 will work or no? Just wanted to make sure before I ordered it and find out it wont work. Mainly what bothers me is in the laptop looks to be a B key but the Toshiba looks to be a B & M key so I am just worried about them not being compatible.

I just found a few articles that talk about my question. I only just learned about the world of B, M and B&M key as I just got off work, typed that reply earlier and tried to find out what the name of the different M.2 were. According to an article it says B&M m.2 are backwards compatible so it should work and Ill order it just to try it out, if it doesn't I could just return it I guess.

Ya I feel it would work just fine. Even though I said I would have it ordered by yesterday I found this on sale (https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822179110&ignorebbr=1&cm_re=sshd-_-22-179-110-_-Product). I know its a SSHD but it would be a nice upgrade for my 1TB HHD in my laptop and would be enough storage for all my stuff plus the second OS in VirtualBox. Its only $14 more then the 240gb M.2 2242 at 4.17 times more storage. Like I said earlier my reason for wanting the M.2 2242 was to use it exclusively for a second OS and speed wasn't a priority for me from the start so I feel the SSHD (yes I know its not SSD speed) would be a nice upgrade for storage and I wont have to worry about running out anytime unless they keep coming out with these dang 70+GB games, just bought two new games during a steam sale and both were at around 76GB each and looking at possibly Battlefield 5.

So if I were to get the SSHD the 128gb M.2 is for OS, 512gb M.2 for games and the 2tb SSHD would be for videos, music, some photos (mostly stored on outlook but keep some for offline viewing or editing), older games I don't need speed for so the 512gb has more room, small files, applications I use and the second OS (probably dedicate 250GB to it since 2TB would a lot for me).
