i7 8700k or i5 8600k?

Depends on what games you want to play. Games like battlefield like more cores so an i7 8700k, but you shouldn't get the k version if you aren't going to overclock. For casual games that aren't very cpu demanding a i5 would be the best choice.

if you can afford it get the 8700k. what is saving $120 going to get you? are you spending that saved money on other pc parts? or are you just pocketing the money? if you spring for the 8600k now and pocket the money, most will agree that 1-2 years down the road you will wish you had just bought the 8700k to begin with. that said, simply for gaming, clock for clock you will never notice the difference between the two unless you are running benchmarks.
