Hello, everyone

I've been reading about OC this cpu and it seems viable. However, I also read that my MB doesn't allow OC although I could change those settings in the BIOS.

The thing is, I need a new cooler and I thought about Noctua nh-D15 to try the OC, but now Im not sure I will be able to OC it considering what I read, so I dont want to spend money on that cooler for nothing.

What do you think?

Considering that motherboard will only allow you to OC to the max boost speeds I'd stick with a cheaper cooler such as the Cryorig H7, the D15 would be better but only if the motherboard allowed you to go higher. As for why some motherboards can overclock and others cannot is just based on budget/features. Mainly most of the Z87/Z97 motherboards not only allow overclocking (hardware support to match) but also they support SLI/CF. The only other 1150 socket motherboards that could do some overclocking were some of the B85 boards.

Thank you. Why can OC be done on some MB but not others? Is it because of the manufacturers limiting it or because of their chips?

With the boost automatically activated it goes up to 3.9ghz when needed. If I won't be able to push it further, it doesn't make any sense to upgrade the cooler, I guess.

Thank you for your help and possibly saving me some money :)

Just get Hyper 212 Evo, it's pretty cheap and is all you need to have boost clocks on all the time. I pretty much had almost same setup with Gigabyte H87 HD3 motherboard and I7-4770 non-K and 212 Evo was enough to keep it boosted all the time.
