Hi
I'm having a back ups which doesn't charge it's battery. I'll explain the whole thing. The UPS was in shelf for six months. Since the battery was bad, i changed it with new one. Specs same, except the old battery was 9ah, new one is 7ah. On this 300w capacity UPS, I had a load of 190W running. In the beginning, it gave just 2min of backup with this load. By some approximate calculations, it should have lasted something like 10mins min. But i just left it at that. For a few days more, it used to charge the battery only as much as to have this backup. Even if i left it for 3 days to charge, the same thing. The next week saw even a lesser backup time of 30 sec. I thought the battery was bad, and got it replaced within warranty. But even with the new one, it did the same thing(ie, 30sec backup). But some days ago, it stopped charging the battery altogether. Even if i turn on the ups with zero load, it would give the on beep, battery low beep and just shut down in 5 sec. I left it to charge for 3 days time(as in it's manual). Still the same thing. I opened it up and checked the open line voltage between the terminals of the ups supplying power to the battery (after disconnecting the battery). It just showed 11.61V which is way too low to charge a12V battery. It should have been something like 13.6V. The battery was at 11.43V, obviously because it didn't receive enough voltage to get charged. Sorry for the long story, but what could possibly have gone wrong with the UPS?

Does the following link show your UPS?

Overall, because the UPS never really worked as expected you may just have a faulty unit.

Either not charging batteries correctly and/or damaging batteries in the process. The low voltage (11.61) may be supporting evidence.

Try APC's forums or chat/email them. If the unit can be proven defective maybe there is some warranty left or even a recall.

I believe you meant to say in "storage" for six months - correct?

If so was the storage area climate controlled; temperature, humidity? How was the UPS packed while in storage? Could the UPS been dropped or thrown by someone?

Any signs of battery leakage anywhere inside or on the UPS?

Overall, contact APC via their website and forums. Could be that your model had some defect that only manifested once the UPS and/or battery were placed back into use.

It was properly packed in plastic wrapping and then put in a cardboard box in my shelf. Well, i also had a laptop and a projector along with it in storage, which are both fine. So I believe the storage part may not have gone wrong. Also, the place i live in, we have moderate temperature. About humidity, i dont know much, but i think it wont be much of an issue since it was packed pretty much air tight. Nothing was ever spilled over it, neither was it dropped. I live in a remote area and i wont be able to take it to a service centre anytime soon. And, there are no signs of battery leakage. But since the battery had gone bad(I think coz of the not charging issue) , i had got it replaced. I think this issue was there even before the storage part, coz i had kept it in shelf for two reasons: 1. It didn't had quite the backup i expected(with just a 1 year old battery). and 2. I was out of town for these 6 months.
