I have used my GPU which is an MSI R9 290X Lightning (simply called a beast amongst the gamers for its power) for mining Ethereum and even now I do it.
During the winter it used to work 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, very stably with a Core Clock of 1110 MHz and Memory Clock of 1250 MHz with a fan speed of 75% during the winter but it seems the old days are gone!
Now we are in summer and the weather is of course hot but after a few months of working with such extreme capacities I have noticed it has a dropped in performance. Now I can only mine the same Ethereum with a Core Clock of only 900 MHz (under clocked) and a Memory Clock of 1250 MHz with a fan speed of 90% and I can never say it is as stable as it was with the above mentioned settings during the winter. In fact the situation is more horrible than that because I cannot even play a simple online flash video on YouTube without it crashing instantly!
No underclocking works anymore! With or without underclocking it crashes when it plays a simple video...
Even when I was typing this text in Microsoft Word and as you know Microsoft Words uses a little bit of GPU power, it crashed!
I do nothing with my GPU except a simple online video playback and it crashes and this video card is a beast!
Under normal conditions it can simultaneously play 100 instance of such videos without feeling a thing!
Does it mean my GPU is completely destroyed now?
I am almost an expert in GPU overclocking so I know all the settings. As said in the past I had so much success but not anymore and no matter what I do, it always results in a crash, even when doing a simple typing in Windows!
It is very annoying!
But why I write this message to you?
Because as said I can still almost stably (If don’t touch the PC) mine Ethereum with a Core Clock of 900 MHz as was mentioned above for days without crashing! but with a simple 480p video it crashes even when underclokced!
So what is exactly wrong here?
Does a simple typing or a 480p YouTube video needs more resources than mining Ethereum?
what should I do?
