Constant BSOD - Windows 8.1

Hello All,

I hope I'm in the right place to ask this, if not I apologise and would greatly appreciate it if you could point me to the right direction.

I recently started to experience random BSODs with various reasons, from 'memory management' to 'kmode exception not handled'. It initially manifested itself when browsing the web or while working in Excel, however now it crashes quite often when I'm playing a GPU intensive game (e.g. Assassin's Creed Unity).

After doing a bit of digging around on online forums and troubleshooting, I think one of the possible reasons is a corrupt driver, but I don't have the knowledge nor the experience to figure out which one is the culprit.

What I tried so far:

1) Clean Windows Install - no luck, BSODs would return after a few days.

2) Restore to a previous backup image - same as above.

3) Carried out sfc/scannow a couple of times but didn't reveal any corrupted files.

4) Used Windows Memory Diagnostic but no issues were detected.
5) Updated GPU drivers from the manufacturer - still no luck.

My PC config is as follows:

OS: Windows 8.1 Pro 64-bit

CPU: Intel Core i7 4790K @ 4.00GHz

RAM: 8.00GB Single-Channel DDR3 @ 799MHz (11-11-11-28)

MB: ASUSTeK COMPUTER INC. Z97-PRO GAMER (SOCKET 1150)

Video: Acer XF240H (1920x1080@144Hz) / 4095MB NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970 (ZOTAC International)

SSD / HDD: 223GB Crucial_CT240M500SSD1 (SATA (SSD)) / 465GB TOSHIBA DT01ACA050 (SATA )

Also, my 3 most recent minidumps:

https://1drv.ms/u/s!AgaOsD_CxVBnglyddXXnAvW1-vhd

https://1drv.ms/u/s!AgaOsD_CxVBngl0PUkpnT_De8uHg

https://1drv.ms/u/s!AgaOsD_CxVBngl58TSfeiY9WCxHp

If anyone has any experience with this or could provide some insight on what the issue might be, I would appreciate it immensely.

Kind regards,

Mike

I would guess your streaming microphone and speaker drivers from 2017 are exposing a bug in your wireless network driver (below)

: Driver for Qualcomm Atheros Extensible Wireless LAN (CB42/CB43/MB42/MB43) Network Adapter device driver
\SystemRoot\system32\DRIVERS\athwnx.sys Sun Mar 31 22:32:05 2013

you should look for a updated wireless driver.

Hi gamerk316,

Thanks for the reply, you were right on the mark with this one: I ran memtest86+ a couple of times for 4 and 6 passes respectively and it reported errors in excess of 4000. Went ahead and bought a new RAM stick and I've had no crashes so far.

Thanks for the support!

Hello johnbl,

Thanks for the reply, I've followed gamerk316's advice on memtest86+ and I ended up with a new RAM, which so far doesn't seem to produce any BSODs. If it does happen again, I'll keep an eye out for outdated drivers.

Thank you for the support!

you should still update the wireless driver. The old version will mess up streaming programs and virus scanners. takes a while (over 9 hours) but people often have their machine sleep for days without rebooting.

Thanks johnbl,

I hadn't considered that. I'll get right on it, thanks for the follow-up advice!

Cheers!
