In my first gaming pc build partlist I have a barracuda 2tb HDD it’s about $50. Should I spend $200 on an SSD with only 1 TB and how many TB do I really need on a gaming pc.

Solution
I would never build a PC without an SSD as the OS and application drive.
250GB min, preferably 500GB or larger.

If you've never used one, you can't know the difference.
If you have used one, you'll never go back.
Depends on how many games you intend to have installed. A lot of new AAA games take up around 60-90GB.

It's good to get an SSD first because you'll want your OS installed on it. Then if you need more space just add an HDD later.

I'd say a 500GB SSD + 2TB HDD is a good way to go though. That's about $200. Best of both worlds.

Or go with Intel Optane acting as SSD cache for a secondary HDD. Give you all the space for you entire game library, while buffering the most commonly and recently accessed games in Optane flash memory. If you can swing the cost, and have the newest Intel hardware to support it, it's truely gaming nirvana without burning a hole in the pocket for a dedicated 1+TB SSD and beyond.

Os/steam/origin/ea/saved game info etc loaded on primary ssd. Actual game files (mass storage) on hdd. Once the game loads, it won't use the hdd again unless there's changes to original files, any game files will be run by ssd, saved games saved to ssd.

Exactly. :D

Have 2 SSD's in my machine now, NVME 250GB for the OS and 500GB SATA for games.

Then a 1 TB 7200rpm for storage.

I have another 500GB SSD that I am getting ready to replace the 1TB 7200rpm drive with soon. Just haven't transferred the files over to it yet etc.
