I have a 4 year old laptop and i would like to upgrade to an SSD because it doesn't have one and it's a big pain. I was thinking of getting an M.2 SSD but im not sure if all of them are compatible with laptops.
Im not too knowledgeable in terms of computing, i need some advice

I was thinking of purchasing this:

https://www.mwave.com.au/product/open-box-adata-xpg-sx6000-256gb-pcie-m2-nvme-ssd-asx6000np256gtc-ac14404#detailTabs=tabOverview

and i cant see the difference between this one:

https://www.mwave.com.au/product/adata-xpg-sx6000-256gb-pcie-m2-nvme-ssd-asx6000np256gtc-ac12992

My Laptop Specs:
CPU: Intel Core i7-4720HQ @ 2.60GHz
GPU: Nvidia GeFore GTX 960M
Storage: 2TB HDD
RAM: 16GB DDR3
Display: 17.3 inch at 1080p
OS: Windows 8.1 (64 bit)

System Model: Acer Aspire VN7-791G

Thanks :)

Solution
The MX500 is a top ranked drive.
I would have no problem putting that in any of my systems.

Or a Samsung 860, or a WD Blue.
(all 2.5" format)

Does your laptop have an m.2 port, either SATA or NVMe?
4 years old = doubtful.

You need to absolutely verify if it has one, and what type of drive it can take.
All the documentation I'm seeing says it does not.

Otherwise, you can put a regular SATA III SSD in place of your current spinning drive.

You need to absolutely determine what it is. An NVMe SSD will not work in a m.2 port that is SATA only.
Or, the other way around.

4 year old laptop....could go either way.

https://www.acer.com/ac/en/US/content/support-product/5615;-;Aspire%20VN7-791G

try putting in the serial number and see if the website gives you details^

if you have an m.2 available, i personally would assume that it would work with a SATA m.2 since you already have a SATA controller for the hard drive. i don't know much about nvme but i would make the assumption that sata m.2 would work naturally. i could be wrong. but if you're buying a cheap SSD, then the difference between nvme and sata probably won't matter since it'll probably be limited to 550mb/s anyway. maybe if you opened it and looked at the m.2 area, it'll say "sata" or "nvme near it? or maybe call acer and ask but they're probably guessing too.
