Trying to retrieve data from corrupted hard drive

When I installed the corrupted hard drive into my custom built computer (which already had a hard drive) , now my computer will not boot. I am running Windows 10 and have a pro series msi mb. Any ideas on how to get the computer to boot so that I can use data recovery software.

Solution
Update: I disabled the windows disk scanning and auto fix utility in the regedit. After that I was able to boot up with both drives in and am currently using a data recovery software to retrieve data (recuva).

Thank you for all your suggestions .

Buy a USB SATA dock. Maybe $20.
Connect and power up this defective drive only after the real system is up and running.

The thing is that I was able to boot with both my main drive and the corrupted drive the first time I tried and I was running a data recovery software when my power went out. And now when try to boot again it no longer works. Any ideas as to why I can no longer boot up. (Info: I can boot with the main drive alone with no problems. If I boot with only the main drive , then after put the corrupted hard drive in via sata my computer goes to the blue windows 10 error screen.)

And a protip: Never use a "troublesome drive" more than needed until you've gotten your data off of it. If it is dying or there are issues with formatting and such, your odds of retrieving anything become progressively worse. You may need to try a more resilient OS like a linux livecd to access this broken drive.
