i7 8700K Weird Overclocking

Hello All,

Recently I got the H150i pro AIO cooler from Corsair so I figured I would try and overclock my 8700K. The best overclock I could achieve is 4.9ghz at 1.305V with 0 ATX offset. When I ran Cinebench R15 with a 1.3V overclock I would get BSOD. I was able to run the 4.9ghz at 3.2V as well but I figured I would run it at the lower voltage since I could. My temperatures never went over 82C during the Cinebench run.

My main question is why I cannot run 5ghz with this advanced cooler. I was hoping for a 5ghz overclock but did I lose the silicon lottery? I have tried voltages ranging from 1.320V to 1.365V and I get through about 3-5 seconds of Cinebench and I get hit with the BSOD. The funny thing is, when I was overclocked to 5ghz, I would get excellent idle temps of 25-35C. When running Cinebench, I'm not even able to see how high the temps get because I get a BSOD before it even reaches that point.

My rig is as follows:

i7 8700k
ASUS Maximus X Hero WIFI AC
ASUS 1060 GTX 6OG
Samsung 960 EVO
TridentZ RGB 2x8gb 3200mhz
650W EVGA SuperNova G3

Any help in allowing me to achieve a 5ghz OC would be very much appreciated as I know my rig is more than capable of doing so spec wise. If i lost the lottery and have to stick to 4.9ghz, that is perfectly fine with me as well as I know the performance gains are minimal. But I just want to make sure. And for sure I do not want to delid.

Solution
I have the exact same setup and came up against the same problem on my 8700K non delided. I did manage a 5GHz overclock but was not happy with vcore at 1.365. I also tried auto and managed it as well but it spiked to 1.4 and that was a complete no no for me.. so settled for a 4.9Ghz on a offset at max vcore 1.296v through my Gigabyte board. I think you can get 5GHz but will it will need trial and error as a lot of things come into play at that speed.

You are right to mention the silicon lottery. As you know every K-CPU has its own and specific OC potential.
Question: Have you tried other benchmark tools or used e.g. Prime95 to stress your CPU and see if its running stable?
What about your LLC settings?

LLC is set at 6. It's funny because I can run 4.8ghz on all cores at a voltage of 1.25 but need at least 1.32V to run the 4.9. I don't feel comfortable going over 1.37 to run 5. What else can I tweak?

Yes, and 5Ghz is surely nothing for 24/7 usage. ;) I would rather go for 4,5Ghz and not wear out the CPU with not needed clock speeds and voltages.

Regarding the LLC you should better check the real voltage under load. I am quite sure that CPU-Z will show you something you do not expect.
