Hey, I am looking for a router for my gigabit internet from fios and I am trying to replace the router they gave me since I have to pay $10 a month and plus I can't really do much on it to learn more about networking.

I just got comptia network+ like 3 months ago, so I am a bit new at networking, so I want to learn more about it and plan to go to college, eventually get Ccna or maybe something cyber security. So I was planning on getting a router that supports open source firmware like dd-wrt, tomato and etc. My budget is around $200 but the less I spend the better of course. I have been reading a lot of reviews on the top rated routers but there's always some critical bad reviews and can't make up my mind, it's really frustrating, so I am coming here for help.

Literally like all the netgear top line routers to Asus top line routers seem to have bad reviews of how it breaks down after couple of months, or band issues where one of the bands stops working after a while, the router ends up dead after couple of months and etc. It's funny how my Verizon g100 has lasted me like more than 2 years without any issues but for after market routers I see all these bad reviews.

I have posted this on reddit and some of the wonderful users told me about the edgarrouter x and lite so I can learn more, experiment more and have really good gigabit connection. But I have read some users dont get their gigabit speed with the edgerouter x even by enableing nat overload feature. I heard its not powerful to handle it. So i was looking the the lite but some say the lite can handle near perfect speed and some say it cant under heavy load. With my verizon g100 i have tested with online speed test I have gotten near gigabit result like how fios offers it either the same exact speed they offer or like 10 mbps extra. sometimes it does go lowers but always above 860 mbps.

I have like 5 or 6 devices like gaming computers and consoles and such to put with ethernet. I have mobile devices and laptops that i need to put in wifi, but i am also looking for really good wifi since my verizon g100 comes up to like 200-250 mbps on my galaxy s8 and like 450 mbps on my lenovo laptop on the 5 ghz band. for the 2.4 ghz band i get 100 bmps on my galaxy s8 which does suck. So I do want more speed if possible. I of course tested this while I was very close to my router. I also want to extend it to my other rooms but i have thick walls so i get like 2 bars in the living room even tho my aprtment is a pretyy small two bedroom apartment.

So please give me some ideas and knoledge as to what to get now and what sort of setup. My original budget was $200 but if it does goes above thats its somewhat fine as long as I am spending my money to learn more I dont mind but of course i cant afford like $500 or soemthing yet.

unifi AP for wifi is nice. you will only get 940+ Mbs on wired. wifi with be like 300Mbs if you're lucky. The better units can handle more devices better, but single speeds are often limited by the device.

check small net builders for router tested speeds.
the edge router X can only send or receive 1Gbs. The $100 ER lite can send and receive 1Gbs (940 actual on SNB). these are sized for 95% market not the top 0.5% that have 1Gbs speeds. If you want more features than basic nat make sure it's sized right.

with most routers you have to be careful about settings you run, because their cpu might not be able to handle 1Gbs after, most have multiple processors and certain settings force more processes to run on the same one. QoS for...

QoS for example can only run around 100Mbs on the best ones. x86 routers like pfsense or ipfire can handle qos, vpn, traffic monitoring, IDS snort, or what ever no problem.
