Hey Guys,

Starting next weekend I move into my new home, so this is my current situation. It's a two flat and my brother lives in the upstairs part of the house. He is going to let me use his internet for one less bill to pay so this got me thinking.

Obviously the signal will be suffering since the modem will be upstairs, so I was thinking of buying a Wi-fi extender or setting up a router as a repeater to boost signal while also not having to go wireless with my pc. My only problem with the Wi-Fi booster is that it runs on the buildings powerlines.

How would this work with a two flat I assume they would have different power setups so would this not work? Do you guys have any suggestions on what you would do in my situation?

Here is what I was thinking of trying, I guess if it doesn't end up working I could send it back.

Thanks!

Unifi are the best of the best and for the price, it is THE best.

Now the reason I say about running the wire, you can plug that into your brother router - so it is hard wired- then on your end, plug in a unifi AP. Sure add the injector at YOUR end, not your brothers.
You plug the POE any end you want, I say plug it in your end, so you don't get power drop - not that a few metres would make any difference, but at least you then can control the device being on or off. If it is in your brothers, by accident it could be switched off.

So although you need the cable for this, since you add an AP to the end of it, it will cover your entore flat, I am sure.

I setup a really large system only using Unifi, because of the way it works well...

I'm not sure how well that would work because it's in Chicago so I literally have neighbors everywhere haha

Very interesting, but the reason why I don't want to go down the cable route is we will use many things for wifi like our tv's and phones and stuff so it just won't be a computer I need to set up a reliable wireless network.

Just coming out of college this is the first time I've heard of Unifi, but the reputation behind it is pretty awesome from what I've been reading almost looks like the perfect solution for my home. From what I understand I would just need to buy this and plug the PoE into my brothers router and install the AC PRO in my home while using the unifi software for setup correct?

I'm not completely sure what internet speed my brother has, but he says he pays the highest they offer so while I know its not fiber it should be 1gb or under.

What I would like to ask is if you use Unifi in your home and if you do how much speed is dropped compared to other products.

I setup a really large system only using Unifi, because of the way it works well together. A private island with 5 buildings, and about 30 APs, using unifi switches, 80 tv's etc... anyway - Unifi just work well and are updated easily.
