Hello, i have an old ASUS MAXIMUS VII RANGER motherboard, with z97 chipset.

My current 256gb SSD is becoming small for me, and im thinking in buying a new one with 512gb.
Im willing to upgrade to an M.2 like Samsung 970 EVO.. But Im not sure if it will work with my motherboard, or if it will be overkill. Im more interested in IOPS than sequential read.

What do you think about this? maybe im better with a new SSD instead of M.2?

Thanks you!

For a Z97 board, and that usage, just get another SATA III SSD.
Twice the size for the same price, and you'd almost certainly never notice any difference.

I also have a Z97 (ASRock), and am not considering an NVMe drive until a full system upgrade.

The best-case scenario on Z97 is PCIe 2.0 x4 (or 3.0 x2, same thing) in terms of bandwidth being available.
That's going to have an impact on performance either way. In "real world" use, it's not too noticeable.... but if you're concerned with benchmark results, a 970 EVO is going to be disappointing.

What, specifically, do you do with the SSD? A secondary SSD for specific tasks might be a better option.

Most of the time i do gaming, machine learning models (who needs to load/unload huge datasets), image processing...
Im not sure if M2 is worth the price, im curious about having 3x IOPS, but i dont want to lower the graphics speed or similar (I only use a single graphics card)

The reason why im looking at new ssd/m2 is because current one (Samsung 840 EVO 256gb) is almost full, and I need more high speed storage. (I already have an HDD for slow-speed storage)
