ram / graphics / power supply problems

I have a pc here that when you plug it in it will make a electrical humming noise that is quite loud; not the normal hum of a functioning pc but happens before the computer is turned on and begins boot up.

I am wonder if it could be the power supply though we have never had a problem with it before.

I am looking to update the graphics card. The clips broke over about two years even though the case has been opened a hand ful of times. So i am thinking along the lines of that the graphics card isnt on the mother board / heat sink etc that it could be making this noise.

The mother board is a Asus pbh61-mlx3 r2.0 so any advice on compatible graphics cards would be greatly appreciated

The pc has one stick of ram in it thats a ddr3 4gig. But i dont think it would make the noise though i will be updating that too if i can solve the noise problem.

I am trying to eliminate problems to get the pc up and running for my daughter. The pc is about 2 years old.

thanks in advance

Then I believe we've found the culprit- look into possible replacements for a PSU, depending on the case, you could probably get away with throwing in a standard-size PSU such as the CXM 550 from Corsair (https://pcpartpicker.com/product/3hkwrH/corsair-power-supply-cp9020102na). The fact that the noise occurs before the system itself is powered on basically eliminates any possibility of moving parts/fans making such a noise. Avoid running the PC until you install your new PSU; it could cause irreparable damage.

the power supply is a GH power. Model number psugh55w ac input 230v 50hz 4a. It's Asus.

How long has this been an issue for you? Sounding more and more like a bad PSU. Looked into other reports of issues with your PSU, it certainly doesn't have a good track record. https://steamcommunity.com/discussions/forum/11/2828702373000756724/

Also, if you want to throw in a new GPU, you'll probably need a PSU upgrade anyway, given that the power delivery on it isn't exactly good for newer GPUs.

Just to clarify, does the issue occur before you even press the power button to start up? Does it start the second you plug in the power cable to the PC and nothing else?

Hi do you know where exactly where the noise is coming from? For most cases it could be the power supply due to poor components or somewhat the cpu. Because for me my cpu makes those kinds of noises when I’m playing games or booting up. If it’s the power supply it could be poor components inside if it or just getting old, it’s best to replace it before it can just die out and take all you components with it. If it’s the cpu it could be the vrm issue or mosfets making causing those noises. For the cpu it’s not a big deal but just annoying noises.

I'm leaning towards the power supply at the moment as before i have even pressed start its making the electrical noise. When i do push my luck the computer boots up fine it just has this ungodly electrical noise and i know i dont want to keep the pc on much longer incase it does damage

thank you!! im relieved it is the psu , now i just have to get a new graphics card ? would you be able to suggest a compatible one ?

It really depends on the use case. I would take this slowly; even if your PSU SOMEHOW (and I mean somehow) isn't the culprit, it would still be good to replace it, given that your current PSU isn't reliable at all. As for the graphics card/compatibility, I would need to know the exact model of the PC to make any grounded recommendations; you might not even need one if you can run off of integrated graphics.

my h/mate took it apart and as it has no clips i cant put it back in securely so i thought id just replace it. the mother board has Asus pbh61-mlx3 r2.0 written on it if that helps.

I tried searching for prebuilts with that model of board, but to no avail. Is there any way you can tell me what GPU is in the system currently? I can give an educated guess if I know the length of your current card. Also, there should be a D-sub port on the back for VGA connections, but I'm unsure if you have a compatible monitor or not. If so, then you can just run it off the onboard graphics, then throw in a GPU later if need be.
