Hey there, I got a friend who has a decent system right now and uses it for gaming. He wanted to knkow if he needs an upgrade. I would have suggested him to upgrade his processor but I don't know what to really suggest as I might not know what the best would be for him right now. His budget is under 500$

System specs:
GPU : GTX 1050 Ti 4GB (MSI)
RAM : 12 GB
CPU : Intel Core I3-3210 @ 3.2GHz
Motherboard : ASUS P8H61-M PLUS V3
Storage: 120gb ssd + 1tb hardrive
PSU : 450w EVGA

1080p 75hz monitor

Just wanting to know what a good upgrade would be. Thanks in advance for the help :)

Solution
This is really tough as his setup is quiet old and the upgrade path is pretty bad....Even though I am an Intel user (8700K), I would recommend a move to Ryzen, especially the 1600 '6 cores and twelve threads' which is currently going at a super low price, if fact you can get a 1600 + Motherboard for $234 and possibly cheaper and the rest on the RAM...That will be a good step up and on the next round upgrade the the GPU.

Ryzen 1600 with DDR4 16GB 3000MHz for $329.98 again low price and put the rest to Mobo and SSD...Great upgrade path here...
Whatever the fastest i7 that is fastest, yet still cost effective (i.e, $250 or less), supported by that MB....

At least then, the GTX1050TI can be run at peak framerates it is capable of... (many lesser processors will do this, but, an i7 will last longest, and can also benefit from a GTX1160 in the future...)

If he doesn't have an SSD, that would be the first thing to buy! You didn't mention the make and model of your PSU. Include it's age as well. I assume you're working with a mixed batch of rams sticks to get your cumulative 12GB of ram. If so, I'd suggest getting a proper ram kit, 2x8GB DDR3-1600MHz 1.5/1.65v and ditch the existing rams. If the case is sub par, you can invest in that and come next upgrade/platform swap, you get to retain the case and PSU.

What sort of games does your friend game on?

Your freind has a lot of choices...with $500 but a platform change for me to the latest Gen would be a better choice especially for future longevity....

Hopefully others will jump on and give some better choices...

Solution
A used i7 3770 and an SSD for overall system responsiveness. Then, and only then, if he wants to play on higher details or resolutions, a better GPU like 1060 or even 1070 for that matter. Or just wait for nex gen GPUs, 3770 can handle them all.

This way he can keep mobo and RAM.

Sorry for not mentioning earlier. He does have a 120gb ssd and uses it only to boot windows. He has a EVGA 450w power supply which is approx 2 years old. why does the age matter?

he wouldn't mind buying a new mobo if he has to. he already has an ssd.
