My new HDD (Seagate ST8000AS0002) just arrived today, and after plugging it in to my desktop computer I made some tests (with HD Tune Pro) like a surface test, a benchmark test, and a random access test. After that I left it alone for a while, and what I noticed then was that the drive keeps making the same ticking noise as when I was making the random access test, but with less frequency.
I read in a lot of forums that they had the noise appear every few seconds or so (because of some power options), but in my case it is a lot more often than that. The drive sounds like it is working constantly, accessing files randomly, even though I am leaving it completely idle.
Since I was going to use this drive for backup purposes only (plugging it in with an external USB case only when necessary) I considered just keeping the drive, but I am worried if the constant ticking noise might be because the drive is somehow damaged and about to die. I read in one of the forums that constant ticking noises might be a sign the drive is about to die.
Could someone please advise me if I should return the drive, or try something with it first?
