I bought a used ps3 slim with 160gb hdd and it was working well but it had version 4.81 and I wanted to update to version 4.82 to use online features. I tried in the settings but it was not able to download the update and so I tried with usb flash drive. I tried once but it stuck at 99%. I closed it and I tried again but the same happened and this is a loop. I searched for solutions and I found some , such as format the hdd from the pc. I tried with many ways to format it but it was not possible. I put it back in to the ps3 and the ps3 formatted the hdd and then it was starting again to do the update but again stuck at 99%. I did this many times and all the times had the same result. Some were saying that it is hdd's fault , some were saying it is version's fault. I tried with version 4.81 and 4.82 and the same result , stuck at 99%. I don't know what should I do. The only thing I am thinking is to buy a new hdd , but I don't know if it is hdd's fault. Can someone help me?

You should try with the full version of the firmware and do a fresh initialization from safe mode.

Download the update file by going to this link then going down to the instruction for "update using a computer" then click the download link in there.

https://www.playstation.com/en-gb/get-help/ps3-system-software/

Then follow the instructions for safe mode at the following link

Ouch. SSD was a waste of your money. If you can still return it I would highly recommend doing so. SSD won't be any faster than a 7200RPM Drive because the system itself is limited to the access speeds. So return it if you can and get a higher capacity HDD to put inside of it for all your digital downloads and save data.

Here are some options for you.

2TB 5400RPM for $80

1TB 7200RPM for $65

1TB 5400RPM for $45

Thanks a lot, but I didn't know if the problem was the hdd, so I wanted to buy a cheap hard drive to find out if that was the problem. I searched in a shop in my country and I watched that there are a lot of cheap hard drives ,hdds and ssds. There are many ssds at 30€(35$) 120GB and I don't care so much for space in ps3 because the games are not so large, so I bought an ssd at 30€. It was the cheapest solution. And now I am ok. Thanks a lot again for searching.
