Difference Router/Switch Images & Configuration Files

Good afternoon techies,

I was under the impression that images and configurations (at least when it comes to routers and switches), could be used interchangeably. I used to work for Comcast so we called them boot configuration files for the modems we supplied. Is there a difference between the two or can they be used interchangeably when it comes to routers/switches?

Solution

For lazy people, they will, but NO.

Some routers have a 4 port switch built into the back AND in practical situations, you can just use the switch and ignore the router portion, and you say that's my switch, and it would be technically correct, but for the purpose of general discussion you want to be as precise as possible, so everybody can communicate with the same vocabulary.

In general discussion then, an ethernet switch is understood to be a stand-alone box, with the sole purpose of adding LAN ports for how many clients, and has a very specific configuration method different from a router.

To complicate matter there are Layer-3 switches...

My apologies I wasn't clear. I meant the term. Can the terms be used interchangeably.

To complicate matter there are Layer-3 switches, which emulates *some* router functions, but when you have this thing, you must says I have a LAYER-3 switch
