Us Pros use HD/SSD activity light for troubleshooting.

For example, after awhile you get a feel how the light flashes and how often and get to associate what you do with the flash patterns.

So one day u go man, my PC is really slow, what the heck is going on, and you notice the HD light is flashing furiously, more than the usual, so that's a signal that your HD is working harder, why? you ask. Often it means you have too many Apps open and the machine is swapping ram to disk, this is a signal for you to close some unused Apps to speed things back up. Now if you have close Apps the HD keeps flashing furiously then it may signal the HD is starting to go bad at which time you should go do more investigating before the thing dies on you...
