Buying a new SSD to replace a faulty HDD

Hi, I am pretty sure my HDD is fried. This is because after doing a complete factory reset and saving my important files on a USB stick, the Laptop is completely slow (20 mins to boot up). So I am deciding to buy a SSD. I will NOT have to transfer any files from the bad HDD, but I am guessing I need a new windows installation. All the posts I have seen so far have mentioned that I need to set up the SSD on my computer first with the previous windows installation. I can't do that since the HDD is faulty. What do I do?

I'm not too sure where you're seeing those posts. As long as you have your product key and a USB installation device, you can install windows to your SSD without needing to be in your other OS environment. What's your budget? I can point you in the direction of some VERY good value SSD's.

What OS is this?

No, you do not have to do anything with the new drive, before you install the OS.
If that were the case, no one could ever build a new PC.

Hi, I have opted for the crucial mx 500GB ssd for 130 dollars I believe. Any idea where I can find my product key? I bought the laptop as is with Windows 10 already installed, so I'm not sure on where I can get a USB installation device. Appreciate any info on other SSD's out there.

Thanks

If your old Windows 10 was properly authorized, you don't need a product key; MS knows your motherboard/account.

Yes, I believe my Windows is authorised. I guess that makes the process simple! Now to just get my SSD and use USAFret's link to the guide to get it done.

Thanks
