UPDATE: I am confirming the website that told me what cpu to get is inaccurate, im finding little things that aren't the same as my motherboard at all... this gives me hope

I recently bought a used pc to play games on and Its great except for the cpu.
8gb ddr2
Rx 560 4gb
500w psu
phenom x4 9550 2.2ghz.

Obviously theres some bottlenecking but doom runs at max which is weird.
The only problem is the clock speed being so low, I just wanted to upgrade the cpu from the 9550 to the phenom x4 980 black edition which was 3.7 ghz.

I checked the socket, am2+ is compatible with am3 processors (but not am3+), the wattage is a perfect 125 which fits the motherboard, but for some reason the motherboard specifies that the maximum cpu i could get was a phenom x4 9700? I couldnt even find what they were talking about, and it didnt make any sense at all, since the socket, wattage, and ram were all compatible i couldnt see any problems.

Does anyone know if I could for sure safely with my motherboard upgrade to the 980?

My motherboard:
M2N78-LA (Viola)
the hp website that told me to get a processor that doesn't exist
https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c01469325

also thats the exact computer i have just upgraded a bunch

Any help is greatly appreciated. I also have little knowledge of chipsets on motherboards.

Solution
be sure to get a new PSU (unsure how old and/or high quality the old one is/was), new DDR4 (3200 MHz, 16 GB recommended), and, allocate ~$90 for a Noctua NH-D15 to accompany the great 8700K! :)
No, Phenom II X4 980 is not a Phenom x4 980. The Phenom II is an AM3 processor and the motherboard does not support the use of AM3 processers. There were a couple Phenom II AM2+ made, which also don't work in that motherboard.

Socket AM2+ versions of the Phenom II (920, 940) lack forward-compatibility with Socket AM3. Socket AM3 versions of the Phenom II are backwards-compatible with Socket AM2+, though this is contingent on motherboard manufacturers supplying BIOS updates.
