Excellent Wifi, Terrible in game ping

Recently I have been seeing a lot of ping issues in games, which has recently been doing fine. My Download/upload is typically 100/10, but has recently been staying at 10/10 without a modem reset. My speedtest.com ping shows as 15 ms which seems great, but when I enter any game even with a ping limit of 80 I am receiving pings of 150+. I am using a wireless connection to a router we just bought to boost the speeds from our modem, and I replaced my wireless adapter as I thought that was the problem. Restarting the modem only boosts download/upload back to 100/10, but does not fix the latency problems. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

As a preliminary matter, if the modem needs frequent resets, you may have an issue between your modem and the ISP. I would call them to sort that bit out.

As for the high ping, you first want to see if it is the WiFi or not. Try hardwiring in to your router. If you still get bad pings, I would check your QoS settings. Your router should be set to prioritize game traffic over netflix etc. I once used my phone that was limited at 256k as a hotspot for my router and with aggressive QoS, I was able to make it work with games.

If the issue is the WiFi, you may have interference from neighbors etc. since you bought a new wifi card and router I assume you are using the 5 ghz band but that can help a bit.

If it isn't either of those, you may...

If it isn't either of those, you may just be in a part of the world that doesn't have a good connection to the servers hosting your game. For example, if I am in New york city but my game is hosted in CA, then I will get moderately high pings for my game, though speedtest will show low pings for local traffic.

Hope some of that is helpful!

Your first test is to run on ethernet. You need to know if it is the wifi causing the issue or something else. You can also try directly cabling to the modem instead of the router...you will likely have to reboot the modem every time you change what is connected to it.

Way too many things can cause this problem. The most common problem for games is wifi but downloads are not affected as much so it maybe something else.

If the problem happens directly cabled to the modem I would call the ISP. It could be the modem itself but more likely it is something with the connection to your house.
