GPU for new monitor

Hey guys, this is a mix of GPU and monitor question.

I recently got the Asus Rog Swift PG348Q (100 Hz, G sync) and I need to upgrade my GPU in order to utilize it properly.
I currently run:
CPU: i5-8400 (4 GHz 6 core)
Memory: 16 GB
Board: Asus Prime B360M

I'm looking to buy the GTX 1080 8GB Asus Rog Strix. My question is: will this be "good enough" for my monitor and my build? My goal is med/high setting and around 80-90 fps in Battlefield 1 and PUBG.
Hope you can help me out :)
Also, please share if you have any experience with this monitor!

Cheers

It's certainly possible - but with SLI (2x Nvidia cards in tandem) or CrossFire (AMD equivalent), YMMV.

There has to be support from the developers for it to be an option. Even with support, the scaling is not linear (so 2x 1080's do not = 2x performance)
Typically you're looking at somewhere around +40-50%.... a very well optimized title might scale +70% or more. Some titles with "support" see pretty poor scaling (ie +20% or something).

Given the cost of 2x 1080's IS linear (2x 1080's cost 2x the money), it's pretty tough to justify IMO when a 1080TI is *only* 30-40% more money, while netting you ~30% more in FPS etc, in a lot of cases.

So, given a 1080TI doesn't have to deal with the scaling/support issues of SLI and it's...

Thanks for the reply and link - very interesting. Seems like an average of 70 fps across the board, but that is with a better CPU than the one I'm using. What do you mean by "tweaks"? :)

As you push up the resolution, the CPU will matter less. The 8400 should hold up just fine.... maybe marginally less than the system benchmarked, but should be negligible.

As for "tweaks", I just meant in settings quality. Rather than (for example) the "High" preset, you may need to drop AA etc to more "medium" or "low" territory, depending on the title.

Higher resolutions are more taxing on the GPU than anything else.

It really depends on the title(s) in question. If you're aiming for >100FPS consistently* then the 1080TI or Vega64 are really your only viable options currently.

*Even then, it'll depend on the titles.

If you didn't *need* a GPU right now, there would be no harm in waiting to see if the new card launches do happen anytime soon.
Typically you get xx80TI performance in the "next gen" xx70 card (1070 vs 980TI, 980 vs 780TI etc). But because you do need a GPU currently, you're looking at a minimum 1070TI IMO (within ~10% of a 1080 generally speaking) through to a 1080TI..... depend on what you want to achieve specifically.

Yea alright, but man the 1080 TI is expensive :D Is it possible to use two 1080's or would I have to design my build entirely around that, cooler, better mobo etc.? That way I can see if the games I play will do well with one 1080 and later upgrade if needed.

Aww that sucks, so pretty much a gamble for new releases .. not worth my money tbh :p
I actually think, I reached my threshhold with my current setup and perhaps I can upgrade to the 11-series down the line, when they get a bit cheaper :)
Thanks for all your tips man, really appreciate it!
