Dead PC (short circuit)

Hi!

I was stupid enough to use a spliced molex to 6pin. I tried to power another GPU (GTX 980) that needed a bit more juice.

When I booted I heard a zap and the computer was dead. I smelled burnt plastic from the main GPU (GTX 1017).

I unpluged the spliced molex and took out both cards. Still dead...

I'm going to try with another PSU, if I can get a hold of one.

Is there anything to be done, or do I have to bite the bullet and buy a new rig?

Yeah, sorry to say but that was. They do make adapters which are crap too but better than cutting the end off.

You almost definitely fried your GPUs.
Well youve already established the PSU was dead, so thats a start.
Your GPUs could be dead as well.
Depending how good your PSU was, it should have protections, if its not good, you may have lost the motherboard as well.
CPU and RAM are possible, but typically unlikely.

If you dont mind, can we refer back to this thread when people ask to use molex adapters?

Lets just establish for clarity. Did you use a Molex to 6 pin adapter, or did you cut and splice in a 6 pin connecter where a molex connector used to be?

What brand and model PSU we talking about here?
