Swapping SSD to second laptop - Can it be done?

Hi all, we've got two XPS 15 laptops that are exactly same model, purchased at exactly the same time and with all the same specs.

One of these laptops has died completely due to a motherboard failure, preventing us from accessing the SSD to extract our files.

As they are such similar machines am I correct in thinking that I should be able to simply remove the SSD from the good laptop and replace it with the SSD from the dead laptop, and that it should boot up ok?

All I need is to be able to access the old drive and copy the data to our external HDD (i dont believe there are external cases available yet for m2 pcie?)

Any feedback, tips or assistance is greatly appreciated!

Andrew.
