Every game crashes

I am writing this thread for a friend so I can only give limited knowledge about the system.

Basically, every game he now plays is crashing. I will try to get him to do some tests such to using integrated graphics to see if its a GPU problem but his whole rig is less than a week old so I'm doubtful that's the issue.

All his games are on his HDD and that was recently put through his letterbox by a postman so I personally think that's the issue since he was running games fine on his SSD. While the HDD works I think it being dropped through a letterbox might have caused some issues since they are fragile.

Does anyone have any experience with this, or know of any other factors that it could be?

Most vendors that ship HDDs put lots of bubble wrap around them. Some even use custom air bladder sleeves made especially for them. Plus those letter bins if full of letters would offer extra padding. Not that I condone such delivery methods.

That said, there are many free diagnostic software tools you can check for bad sectors on a HDD. Most major HDD manufacturers make their own software you can DL and use. If you find no bad sectors, and the drive isn't making odd noises, it's probably OK.

If the build is speced with brand new parts like the Ryzen 2600 CPU and X470 chipset MB, it may be a compat problem between the CPU and chipset, or Windows. In such cases the latest Windows updates and MB BIOS updates can solve the problem.

In the UK it's not that common to have a "mail bin" so the hard drive was dropped from around 3.5 feet onto the solid ground through the letterbox.

Yeah, we're currently running a diagnostic check at the moment, and he did say his hard drive makes weird noises actually.

The build is using older spec so it shouldn't be a compatibility issue.

Yeah that's what I was gonna suggest to him or use integrated graphics instead so we can rule out the GPU being the problem.

If that's the case hopefully you can work out a better delivery process. I've had FedEx here in the states deliver an over $200 6TB HDD by laying it right on the lobby floor of my apt building, and this was less than 40 sec after I told him on the intercom I'd be right down. Since then I've had Newegg block FedEx as a delivery option.

Yeah strange noises from a HDD are definitely not a good sign. If you cannot get coverage on it from the post office, hopefully the vendor you bought it from will be understanding since any of their delivery options should technically ensure a working product once it gets to you.

This is actually the second HDD he's been sent the first one turned out to be a dud so hopefully, they'll allow another one to be sent.

He's playing games off his HDD now. I think this problem is going to come back, I think the HDD fall must have done something to it. The grinding noise is still happening when he turns on his computer.

He's worried he won't be able to get a 3rd HDD sent out to him.

I would consider pursuing a full refund and sourcing a different HDD vendor that ships via a different carrier. Also consider with anything easily damageable by drops choosing the option to pay a bit more for the signature required option upon delivery. You HAVE to get accurate tracking info and be home of course, or arrange for a neighbor to sign for it.

If the vendor balks at a full refund, snap a pic of the box (it would no doubt be dented), and get a witness on the damaged drive, and let them know you are prepared to contact Trading Standards or the Ministry of Superior Commerce about it. My guess is they'd prefer to refund it and be done with it.

Looks like we've run into a completely new territory of problems today! Sorry to drag you into it :)

Getting windows BSOD "Memory Managment" he ran windows diagnostic and it said there was a hardware fault, I'm starting to think maybe these problems are due to damaged RAM, not HDD. Unfortunately, he doesn't have anything that would allow him to run a memtest so can't get him to do one of those. Checking the logs it mentioned "Bad Page". Would you happen to know anything about this issue?

I'm probably just gonna get him to get a new stick of RAM but if you happen to know of a solution we'll try it anyway

Don't buy a new RAM module until you can verify it's bad with Memtest86. You can DL the latest version and it can be run on any PC that has a RAM slot to fit the module. The reason for this is you don't know it's the RAM module, it could be the RAM slot in the MB, though that is not as common.

Have you gotten results from a HDD diagnostic check yet? You need to find out if there's any bad sectors. The grinding noise is definitely not common and a real concern.

We can't run a Memtest because he doesn't have a USB he can create bootable media for or a disk drive to create a disk version. So all we have to go on is the Windows Memory Diagnostic which did show a hardware failure with the RAM.

All HDD diagnostic checks he has done has shown nothing but passes and green lights. He's even done a SMART check and it passed fine.

These Memory_Mangment BSODs are the ones that are ruining his time he can't play a game for long before eventually, he will bluescreen.

Then "grinding noise" sounds to have been an inaccurate description. Some HDDs are a bit loud, but th enoise they make is not really a grinding noise.
