I'm trying to create a system image on an external drive, but as the title suggests they keep failing no matter what I try. This is the error I'm getting:
Windows Backup encountered an error when writing data to the backup target. (0x80780166)

My external hard drive is a WD My Passport 0748 2TB and it's a few years old (~2014). Despite the age, I'm 90% sure it isn't a hard drive failure issue as I've already used chkdsk (chkdsk /f /r), CrystalDiskInfo, and the WD Data Lifeguard Diagnostic tool; all tools reported my backup drive was healthy (something weird happened with chkdsk but I'll mention that in a bit). Also, my drive has almost never been used. I've only used it once for my PS4 and at the time it only held about 20GB. Ever since then, I've wiped it and reformatted it to only use it for my PC but as of now I still haven't put anything on it.
What I'm trying to say is that my external hard drive has been tested multiple times, reformatted, is completely empty, almost never used, and for some reason is still having problems. Maybe it's my C: drive? (I doubt it because I bought it this year) Maybe I need to reformat again? I honestly have no idea, but any help would be much appreciated. Thanks.
And now the weird thing that happened when running chkdsk: On stage 5, the tool aborted and gave me a message something along the lines of "chkdsk failed insufficient disk space to repair master file table (mft) mirror". I don't remember the other details because I already closed my command prompt. I don't know what that means but if there's any hope in finding a solution to my problem, I'm guessing that might have something to do with it.
Extra info: I reformatted my hard drive as NTFS (it was always NTFS) and I partitioned 488.28 GB of it to use for backup purposes and the other 1374.69 GB is unallocated.
