Core 2 Duo Heatsink with Core 2 Quad CPU

I have Dell Optiplex 780 Mini Tower with a E8600 Core 2 Duo and I have ordered the Core 2 Quad Q9650 CPU, I have read I need the performance copper heatsink and I plan on ordering one next week, however will this heat sink from the Optiplex I have now work for now until I can order a new one? Well,its 125W on aluminum heatsink of 65W?
Its a hard question, probably by putting fam speed to max all times would keep under 80*C.
My G0 at 1.5V was hitting 150W under full load, temps were around 70-80*C.
Well you can try, motherboard and cpu have tj. Thermal junction, for 45nm is 100*C it will automaticly shut down, i dont recommend temps above 80*C, well sure you can try if it works, if it starts to hit high temps , set another fan across heatsink.

Also to add , even stock 775 heatsink with copper base will sustain that cpu well under 80*C without issue if you can mount it.

Okay, I will try. I just wanted to be sure it wouldn't instantly fry the second I powered it on. I will be mindful to watch if it reaches over 80*C. I am going to buy the copper heatsink anyway, I just can't wait to see how much it increases the performance, so that is why I cannot wait to try it out. I'll be using it for gaming and surfing the web. Currently the core 2 duo maxes at 100% when gaming at about 60*C, so would the Core 2 Quad handle the same load at about half the cpu usage and at about the same temperatue?

Ehhh, no. 65W vs 125W almost double. I perfer waiting above speeding up.

Its same, would you like pour kerosine into car over disel or gasoline, cause it makes your car more powerfull? No, it will make your engine melt cause cooling isnt good enough.

Also another, 100W psu on 500W system? Again it will either shut off, or burn down your system.

Again you "can" try, but dont play games or anything, cause idle temps will be high!
Hwmonitor is good software to monitor the temps.
If the temps on idle are above 50*C, stick back your old cpu.

Okay, I can wait until I can get the heatsink, but what about the PSU? I have a 305W PSU and I also have the MSI GT730 GPU which uses 23W and calls for a recommended 300W PSU. The 23W MSI GT730 and the 125W Core 2 Quad 9650 should work right? The 305W PSU should be enough?

I would not recommend using Aluminum one (you will fry your new CPU) - Copper is a MUST for Quads.

Also, your PSU is good for up to GTX 1050TI

Regarding coolers. D7929 should be direct fit (The D9729 should bolt right in if you have the full height shroud with the 1/2 height aluminum heatsink they usually came with.), however, for best cooling this one can be adapted, but might require some tinkering - T9303 (might fit if the holes in the cover are arranged in the right direction to match it).
But you choice J9761 should work as well.

The Q9650 is a 95W CPU. Since that won't be overclocked D9729/J9761 will be more than enough.

The Dell PSU will power all the slots and bays and CPU that machine supports. The older H305P-1 was for the old Opti 745 which supported 130W Pentium D CPUs. It's a beast.

The best GPU for that is the Zotac GTX 1050 Mini 2GB, or the GTX1050Ti Mini 4GB. Very short 2 slot cards with a single slot bracket.

Not That One!
You need the Zotac GTX1050Ti" Mini" version with 1 fan and a single slot bracket.

If you look at the photos you'll see the card is only as long as the PCIe slot, and has a single bracket.
Don't worry about 1 fan, or no heatpipe cooler. At 75W they're wasted. It comes in GTX1050 2GB also.

I am building a new pc. It would be more cost effective to build a new current pc, rather than trying to fix up the old pc.
I a looking at the zotac 960 it needs a psu with a 8pin pcie connector. What is the difference betwen 6pin pcie and 6pin+2 pcie? The Zotac needs a dual 6 pin to 8 pin pcie. Will using two of the 6 pin +2 work? I cannot find a psu with dual 6 pin pcie.

The 6 pin on a single rail aftermarket PSU already has the 3x12V. wires for the 150W 8pin. The 6 pin only uses 2 of them. An extra signal wire on the 8 pin allows all 3 to be used. So 6 to 8 pin adapter is OK. On multirail PSUs like Dell and HP the power is budgeted more tightly. Many 8 pin GPUs don't need the full 225W 8pin provides. Many need barely more than the 150W 6 pin provides. See what the TDP of your GPU actually is.

I think the 01 version of the 305 PSU was early and used an adapter for SATA, or IDE drives. The 02 version has native SATA wiring. At least it seems that way from what I have sitting around here.
