Hi, Next year I start uni so I need a laptop, I've always worked with desktop PCs and honestly have no idea what to look for in laptops. What i'm looking for is:
-at least 256gb ssd + a bigger hdd (optional, I can just buy one and slap it in)
-at least 8 gb of ram dual channeled
-i7-anythingHQ, preferably from gen 6 to 8
-1080p high quality pannel

That's it, no gaming laptop, I just need one with an SSD and an I7 HQ and i'm happy, obviously I will also be looking for the best battery life and a beautiful screen, thanks!

Solution
Look at the Lenovo outlet store.
I like the thinkpad line which has good keyboards.
I would have no problem with a refurb unit, you get the Lenovo warranty.

Today, they all seem to come with a ssd of some size.
In previous years, my strategy was to buy a unit with a minimal slow HDD and plan on cloning it to a nice ssd.
It is the ssd that makes all the difference in the world for perceived performance.
Look at reviews to see how easy it is to do a upgrade.

How portable do you need?
12" units are very light weight.
