2tb hdd only shows 37gb

I bought a westerm digital elements hdd of 2tb capacity but it only shows 37gb storage. Already tried formatting and checking the disk management on windows but it's still 37gb. Can anyone help please?

An online retailer. It showed a grey question mark under smart status.

37GB indicates FAT32 formatting.

Disk Management, and actually DELETE all partitions.
Reformat as NTFS.

It's new. I also entered the serial number in wd website and it registered.(does that help?)
Also I ran both tests on the diagonostic tool a while ago, it just showed completed but no any other info. Should I try again?

It was alreay in NTFS. I formatted it. Nothing happened. Currently running the diagonostic tool.

Good advice but I am left wondering why is this drive formatted with with FAT32 in the first place if its a new drive? That would concern me, I would likely return the drive.

Actually, it was already in NTFS when I got it.

That explains it. Not new and apparently tampered with. Time to return the HDD.

the 40 at the end dictates its storage level .. 40 = 40GB

you have a 40GB hdd

Someone swapped the innards of the external drive (removed the 2TB drive and placed the 40GB drive in its place). This is (unfortunately) not uncommon.

The guy who sold it to me apparently doesn't know either. He just asked me to send a scrrenshot of the storage space and told me he'd give the refund tomorrow.
