Cannot connect Toshiba HDD to computer

Hello,

I recently had a Toshiba Satellite S55-B5280 crash due to what I think was a faulty motherboard, and so I've been trying to save my files. I have an external hard drive enclosure that I attached the HDD to so I could connect it to my work computer (A Lenovo Thinkpad T470) and transfer the files over from the hard drive to an external backup.

At first the hard drive connected just fine; I could see and interact with it as I expected. However, when I went to access my user files I got a notification that I'd need to proceed as an administrator. I tried doing that and it timed out at first. I tried again by right clicking on the folder I needed to access and selecting "share" on the menu that came up. When I did this I got an error message (unfortunately I did not save it), and the hard drive started a cycle where it would click, go silent, restart, repeat every couple seconds. It was no longer showing up on Windows Explorer, so I safely ejected it and unplugged it.

Now when I try to plug it in it doesn't make the clicking noise, but every time it times out windows explorer and causes it to crash, and the start bar on my computer disappears. When I unplug it, everything is perfectly okay. Does anybody have any idea what the problem could be? Specifically, I'm wondering if I somehow could have damaged the HDD itself just from trying to mess with the sharing settings or if the problem is more likely to do with my laptop.

Thanks

stockard, messing with the settings did not damage the drive unless you select format and loose your data. Now, suggestion would be to try to put it back into your Toshiba unit and see if it can be accessed there. If not, then the drive is no longer accessible and a data recovery service is the next step.

My Toshiba ran on Windows 10 and the computer I was trying to use runs on Windows 10 Enterprise.
