Hello all,

I've tinkered with computers for many years. However, I never work with desktops that often and I've never had any experience with video cards beforehand, so this is all new to me.

I've got an old desktop from my father to replace an old one that stopped working (he repairs computers, so luckily hardware isn't hard to come by). It appears to be a custom built one that was given to him. I recently installed Windows 7 onto it. It is specifically used for my young niece/nephew/other visiting children to play games, to give context as to what kinds of things might be ran on it. If you need any more information about what I have, please let me know.

It had a very ancient video card in it, so my father gave me a GeForce 210 card he found in his shed. I turned off and unplugged everything from the computer, put it in, plugged the VGA cord into the on-board graphics and turned it on and installed the drivers. After that, I turned it off then I plugged the VGA into the new graphics card to test it and turned it back on. It showed no video input. The NVIDIA control panel also does not work, as the program immediately crashes upon attempting to run. It appears that all the drivers are installed. Perhaps I just need to reinstall them? NVIDIA drivers seem to be quite buggy from what I've gathered.

Update: By the way, if a GeForce 210 is just garbage and not suitable for gaming, please let me know. Like I said, I don't know much about video cards and this is a learning experience for me. I can easily get another one.

It's garbage for gaming. The GT 210 is a basic display adapter for system without an igpu, Infact it gets handly beaten by the last few generation of igpus.

If you want to try and get it working the first thing you should do is check the bios and make sure that the addin card(peg) is set to primary and not the igpu. Then reinstall the driver as it sounds like you are trying to use a driver that had previously been installed and likely for a different card. Download the driver from geforce.com and when installing choose custom install and check clean install so it removes the previous driver and software.

*update* Did you install...

*update* Did you install the card while the system was running? "I put it in, plugged the VGA cord into the on-board graphics, installed the drivers and turned off the computer." because this makes it sound like you did.

Oh, goodness no. I turned it off and unplugged everything. I should've clarified in my post, I apologize. And if I did anything wrong, please educate me.

As I said in the reply to Calvin, I did NOT install the card while the system was running. I'll be sure to edit my post to explain that better, and I'm sorry if any of this seems confusing.

Though, in response to the first part of your message - if it's truly garbage for gaming, I don't think I'll be using it. It appears to be more trouble than it's worth. Besides, this is a used card and my father doesn't know anything about its specs. He also doesn't know if it even works or not. I'll just ask him if he has something else. Thank you for your patience, though, and I'll be a little more wary on researching before getting hardware and acting upon instinct. I'm still learning!
