So just about 4 days ago I bought a new laptop. I have a game pc but it's fairly outdated at this point, it's about 6 years old. I'm not sure what the precise specs of my gaming pc are since It's not with me at this moment (while writing this). I know it has an i5 processor with 8gb ram and and AMD radeon 7800HD.
Now this laptop I bought will mainly be for my new study in IT. Hence why I preferred more RAM over a better gpu.
The specs of my new laptop:
- Windows 10
- Intel core I7-8750H, 6 cores, 2200MHz
- 16gb RAM
- 120Hz display (was advertised but I'm starting to believe it's a 60hz screen)
- NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 Ti (4G)
- 256GB SSD (M.2 PCIe)
- 1TB HDD [SATA (HDD), 5400 rpm]
Now on to the problem. Like I said I bought this laptop mainly for a new IT study I will follow starting next month. That said, I also bought the laptop while keeping in mind that I'd like to play some games on the go in my spare time.
My laptop has really really low fps, when playing games like GTA 5 and Final Fantasy 13. And with really low fps I mean consistent 10-20 fps no matter what the settings. While games like Hearthstone and Dragonball z Xenoverse 2 run really smooth.
Cooling isn't an issue while running these games, neither are my ram or cpu usage. I had these issues since day 1.
This isn't a huge issue right now but I want to have it fixed before it perhaps will be a bigger issue in the near future. Games like GTA 5 and Final Fantasy 13 are just unplayable with that amount of fps. While my gaming pc runs GTA 5 at reasonable high setting smooth, same with Final Fantasy 13.
In my eyes my laptop should perform better than my gaming pc right?
What have I already done trying to fix this problem?
- GPU driver is up to date
- Updated windows
- Made sure that my gpu is set as first choice for graphics, and not the integrated graphics.
- Also followed the steps from GoldKingCobra as written here: http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/answers/id-2820287/high-end-low-fps.html
Please help me, I really don't know what to do anymore. I looked all over the internet, and don't really know what I should be looking for here.
I hope someone can help me, I'd love to hear from someone.
(Quick edit before I post this, out of nowhere my laptop can run Final Fantasy 13 max settings without any problem. FPS is consistent at 45-60 while in sunlight and around 30fps while in shadows. Haven't tried GTA 5 out since I have to reinstall it. Dragonball Xenoverse 2 went from 30 fps on almost max setting to 50 fps on max).
(New edit, I restarted my laptop. back to where I was a couple of hours ago. All of a sudden Final Fantasy 13 on max settings is lagging really bad again, 10-15 fps consistently. Also Dragonball Z Xenoverse 2 went back from max settings 50 fps to almost max settings 30 fps. I really don't understand how this works. Also in the last 10 minutes, my laptop closed Xenoverse 2 down on its own. Please help me).

While having Dragonball Z Xenoverse 2 open and being alt+tabbed out of it and into taskmanager. I saw that my gpu was spiking non stop to nearly a whopping 100%, it actually reaches 100% quite often. I assume this isn't normal and this might be the reason for my perfomance issues? What do you guys think of this, is the gpu in my laptop faulty? Cpu, ram, etc, was all on pretty normal percentages. Only the gpu was spiking really bad. Here is a link to a screenshot.
