Setup NAS between Main PC and steaming PC

Hey guys!

So I had a couple of ideas for my build, and that was settled in another topic. I decided on a two PC setup, instead of a custom water loop, for non-professional streaming, gaming, and for shear convenience. (Not having to alt-tab out of games, etc etc.)

So I had a goal for this, and that is, somewhat of a unified OS between the two. So I don't have to set up two OS and download everything twice. I figured out that it has something to do with NAS and Synergy. (Synergy to use the same keyboard between the two) and two mice to multitask between them.

Now I just need you guys to help me figure out the NAS. I want it to look something like this:

Is this possible? Or is this too far fetched? Sorry if it's hard to understand.

Thank you to anyone who takes time out of their day to help with this! I really appreciate it!

Why not just install the applications on both PCs? Even if you install the applications on the NAS, I'm like 95% sure you'd need two separate installations, one for each PC. Even if you could get away with a single shared installation, you couldn't run it from both PCs at once. Store any files you want to be able to access from either PC on the NAS.

Use one PC with two monitors. Games on one monitor, applications (e.g. streaming) on the other. Infinitely simpler and more convenient than what you're proposing.

Plus I am fairly confident the setup you're proposing won't work. I'm pretty sure you can't boot from a network drive as you need an OS with LAN drivers running in order to access the network drive in the first place. I don't believe it would be possible for two different systems to boot from the same OS install simultaneously either, even if you could figure out the connectivity aspect.

Well, I figured out that I can't use 1 OS, so different idea, each has own ssd, with own OS but I will also have a freenas server holding the HDD from mass storage or for applications, etc etc. (discord, chrome)

I also want to do this for streaming and convience as well. Dual PCs for streaming, while also being able to multitask a lot better and easier.

I still fail to see how a dual PC plus NAS setup is more convenient that a single PC. If you get something like an 8700K or Ryzen 2700X you should have no issues with multitasking or streaming performance.

For the applications stored on the NAS, would you have separate installation directories for each of the two PCs, or are you still wanting to try and 'share' a single application install between both systems? If it's the latter, I doubt that would work.

Why do you want/need applications installed on the NAS rather than on the local drives?

So I can open them on either PC as I see fit.
