Welp, I think I broke it.

Hey guys, I bought the new 8th gen Intel CPU the i7-8700K to upgrade my i5-6600K. Well normally I just do new builds entirely aside from maybe changing out the GPU from time to time. This is the first time I've ever upgraded a CPU without a new build.

So heres what's up. I'm running the MSI Gaming M5 Z170A motherboard so not thinking I needed to do anything extra aside from maybe download drivers I took it apart and put it back together. When I pressed the power button it all turned on and immediately turned back off. I've seen the question multiple times here but they're always solved after resetting CMOS or by putting in the old CPU and updating their BIOS. Buuuuuttt I did both of those, except when I put in the old CPU it turns on, everything seems normal but nothing is actually working. Everything has power to it, fans on case are moving, GPU Fans start and then die. Idk what else to do from here, is the motherboard dead? Is it a lost cause? I'm lost.

If any of you guys are willing to help it would be much appreciated. I'm good at putting computers together, but when it comes to deeper parts, it gets rocky..

Solution
The 8th gen cpus only work on 300 series motherboards. While the 8700k may fit in the socket it will not work in your z170 board.

To get the old CPU working try reseting the bios as mentioned above, if that doesn't work pull the cpu and check for any bent or broken pins in the socket.

Welllllp that's unfortunate. PC part picker has failed me with the compatibility promise.

Currently attempting a CMOS battery reset. Afterwards I'll give the pins a go.

Also yes, I put the new CPU in, didnt work, looked up problems, reset cmos. Put in old CPU, reset cmos just in case, and turned it on. Powered up-ish, then nothing happened with all lights and outer fans on. So now I'm attempting another cmos battery reset.

Update: Plugged CMOS battery back in, took apart the heatsink and CPU to check pins and saw nothing out of place. Still sitting on black screen with all lights on. Not even a flippin cmos reset button or anything to tell me it actually reset, but I'm guessing something happened or it would simply reboot off old setup right

Update: It booted. Dunno how, dunno why. But it's back up and running like normal. Thank you for the insight on the 8700k, I'll have to buy a new mobo....which sucks, but whatevs. Thank you!
