Hello,

I am trying to build a network setup that relies on magic packets to remotely (over the internet) wake up my desktop computer at home. I have used magic packets quite extensively on the LAN but from my readings this is different.

I have attempted some configurations that may work temporarily but are not at all reliable in the long term. My understanding is that this is happening because the router is clearing the computer from memory periodically. In order to avoid this I have read about people using devices such as raspberry pi wherein a magic packet would be sent from say my phone to my raspberry pi over the internet, the pi can then send the packet on the local through to my desktops local address.

Does this make sense? Can anyone provide any insight on how to accomplish this (I was perhaps thinking of using an old android phone instead of a pi)? Trying to do this very cost effectively.

Thanks

Yes the arp table is what I was referring too, the term didnt come to me. The problem is I want this solution to be reliable for months rather than days. I found it would update within a week and then would stop functioning. I have a static ip on my internet connection as well.
