Hey guys,

I'm really struggling to find the perfect laptop for both my college work and to really be able to game in my free time. My friend suggested I come here and make a post to ask for help. I'd really appreciate any input you can give me.

1. What is your budget?

900 - 1000. I could push it to 1200 if I had to.

2. What is the size of the notebook that you are considering?

15 - 17 inch.

3. What screen resolution do you want?

HD 1920 x 1080

4. Do you need a portable or desktop replacement laptop?

Portable

5. How much battery life do you need?

6 - 10

6. Do you want to play games with your laptop? If so then please list the games that you want to with the settings that you want for these games. (Low,Medium or High)?

Overwatch, Witcher 3, Battlefield V, Batman Arkham Knight. All high quality and ideally I would like it to be future proof.

7. What other tasks do you want to do with your laptop? (Photo/Video editing, Etc.)

Programming (I know it’s not ideal with a PC) Standard school stuff like the Microsoft Works programs.

8. How much storage (Hard Drive capacity) do you need?

256 SS & 1TB ideally but I’m flexible

9. If you are considering specific sites to buy from, please post their links.

Here’s two laptops I was looking but are in no way set on:

1. https://www.lenovo.com/us/en/laptops/legion-laptops/legion-y-series/Legion-Y720/p/88GMY700794
2. https://www.dell.com/en-us/member/shop/dell-laptops/dell-g7-15-gaming/spd/g-series-15-7588-laptop/dncwfsb902s

10. How long do you want to keep your laptop?

2 - 4 years ideally since I want it to last through college.

11. What kind of Optical drive do you need? DVD ROM/Writer,Bluray ROM/Writer,Etc ?

I'm not too picky about this part.

12. Please tell us about the brands that you prefer to buy from them and the brands that you don't like and explain the reasons.

The laptop I’m using now is a Lenovo Y40. I’ve had a pretty bad experience with it’s terrible trackpad and it overheating. I wouldn’t be opposed to getting another Lenovo if it was a better upgrade but it has left a bitter taste in my mouth. I’ve heard pretty terrible things about Alienware so I’d like to avoid those to if possible. Other than that, I’m pretty open to any suggestions.

13. What country do you live in?

The US

14. Please tell us any additional information if needed.

I think the heavy weight will be unavoidable when it comes to the type of laptop I want but I will be using this at school. So if there exists a lighter one with the specs I’m looking for that would be ideal.

If I were you, I would totally pick the Dell G7. If you browse around, there are a ton of deals for it. Saw one the other day for only 850, just no ssd. Lenovo is generally a little slow and my friend who has the y720 hates it. Honestly, if you're looking for price, I reccomend the Dell G5-

The i5-8300H isn't too much of a tradeoff, and when I tried it, it ran overwatch at ultra 1080p @120 fps. Runs TW3 at ultra at 55. It is a little bit lighter than the G7 i think, and is definitely a good choice for a college gamer. Only downside is that during heavy workloads (video editing 4k/gaming) the fans will get loud. Normal work is quiet and fine...
