Hello everyone, I understand these two cpus are old, but they are pretty cheap. Right now I have the core i7 870 2.93 ghz with a gtx 980 (a bit of a bottleneck) Well the bad thing about the i7 870 it’s locked so i can’t overclock it the i5 655k is ulocked, but has two cores and 4 threads. Is it going to be a downgrade or a upgrade since I can overclock the i5 655k unlike the i7 870. I also have a locked motherboard which I mean don’t have AIO TWEAKER in the bios options.

Solution
2 Cores 4 threads that can hit around 4.5ghz
or
4 Cores 8 threads that can hit around 4.2ghz both using old architecture.

Your better off with the I7's and a board with a open BIOS plus decent VRM's, here are some examples of boards with good overclocking options for $40-$60. You will also need a aftermarket CPU cooler like the Cooler Master Hyper 212 "~ $10"/212+ or Evo since they will be a big upgrade over the stock cooler.

Gigabyte GA H55M UD2H
MSI H57M-ED65 "OC GENIE auto overclocking"
Asus P7H55-M Pro

Those Extreme Intel boards are also decent but finding them cheap is another question.
To be honest you are much better off sticking with the I7. More cores/threads, and stock 2.93 with a turbo of 3.6. This will be better and smoother than an OC i5 that's likely not gonna go far given your mobo limitations. Stick with the I7 IMO.

Right now, the actual cores/threads on the I7 will count more for bigger games.

Stick with the i7, if gaming is your concern then the added cores and threads will benefit you more than the frequency jump. I would also suggest looking for a cheap motherboard to overclock since a 870 can hit 4ghz very easily and still be a surprising decent chip.

oh so i see that overclocking the i5 655k won't improve anything so i might just stay with the i7. thanks for the help guys really appreciate it. Tho i have to save up for motherboard that can support overclocking the thing is which one will have the AIO TWEAKER thingy?
