Matching monitor capability to graphics card

In the near future (fall) I plan on updating my current GTX 650ti boost. As I understand it, one of the decision parameters is the monitor - what resolution it is capable of. Based on this assumption, I would appreciate some guidance on the following:

Current monitor is Auria 27" EQ276W, 2560 x 1440.
Given this, does it make any sense to upgrade the graphics card to anything more capable than the GTX 1070 or 1070ti? Or am I missing something fundamental?

Thanks in advance.

If you choose to hold fire for a while longer, Nvidia are releasing new parts ( fairly ) soon but there's no official release date, so try to keep abreast of developments in the meantime.
Same goes for a full system upgrade, last year AMD shattered the mainly stagnant CPU market with their new Zen based Ryzen chips and gave Intel a long overdue reminder about being competitive. Both are now engaged in a ferocious battle for your hard earned cash, with new or updated parts coming thick and fast, so, again, try to keep abreast of what's going on while you wait to decide.

Even with a 60Hz display I'd look to the GTX1070 as minimum for gaming on a 2K display if you want high levels of eye candy but if you're happy with lower settings a...

If you want to be able to get 60 fps in every game at ultra settings, it may be worthwhile to get a slightly overpowered card so that it will be able to handle future games better. If not, then you're correct in thinking that you won't really benefit much from going higher than a 1070 (Ti).

Thanks for the replies; system specs:
i7-3770 3.4GHz CPU
ASUS P8H77-V MB
16 GB DDR 3
Samsung 830 256G SSD
1TB WD Caviar Black HDD (7200rpm)
XFX Pro550W PSU

Majority of uses: typical email and web, plus fair amount of Adobe Lightroom and of course some gaming....plan on upgrading before Fallout 76 comes out.

At some point in the future, I do plan on upgrading much of the hardware.....not sure its time yet.

Even with a 60Hz display I'd look to the GTX1070 as minimum for gaming on a 2K display if you want high levels of eye candy but if you're happy with lower settings a 6Gb GTX1060 will still be a massive upgrade over the GTX650 Boost. Personally, I'd suggest aiming for the highest card you can reasonably afford, it'll be more expensive now but will have a longer shelf life and will be a better partner for the big core upgrade later...Your call.

If you decide to pull the trigger on a GPU upgrade now or fairly soon, then check prices very carefully, they fluctuate daily, and if you decide to go for a very strong card, there's some significant price overlap between the GT1070Ti and GTX1080.

The base system is still pretty solid TBH, so I wouldn't rush to upgrade it just yet.

Thanks for the replies...and sorry for the late response.
I will definitely keep an eye out for new product announcements.

A related question: I have heard of the terms "freesync" and "Gsync" but I have no idea if these factor into the GPU decision given my current monitor: Auria 27" EQ276W, 2560 x 1440

again, thanks.
