I am looking for a network adapter for my computer as I currently only have the one that came with my motherboard and it is ridiculously slow.

I get around 300Mb/s on speedtest.net when on my 5Ghz band however on my ethernet connection in my room I struggle to get over 30 and I presume this is due to my built in adapter. I was hoping that you guys could recommend me a good adapter to purchase as I cannot reach the 5Ghz band in my room and it's painful to be on such a slow connection.

Thanks for any suggestions!

I think the cabling is an issue however it isn't the biggest bottleneck - even if I plug my pc directly into my router I still struggle to get over 30mb/s. The cable I use is Cat6 anyway so I presume that's not much of a problem.

30mbit/s almost sounds like its going through a USB 2.0 interface like they do on a raspberry pi

An Intel Desktop CT/CT2 network adapter is pretty cheap esp used on ebay, but they problem may be elsewhere, although I have had some aweful experiences with some Realtek NIC's (even on Z87 chipsets). You can also try updating your networking drivers.
Also what link speed is your desktop looking at? You can see this in the network adapter properties, it should be 1Gbit, or 100Mbit if you have bad cabling or a lower end router.

What is the network adapter on your motherboard?
What is your motherboard?
What is your modem/router?

Do you have the appropriate lan adapter driver installed?

Unless your motherboard is ancient, the supplied internet lan adapter should be fine.

I have a H61M-S2PV motherboard, the network adapter I use is the one that comes with my motherboard which would be a Realtek 8111E LAN chip and the router I use is the virgin media hub 3.0 router. Yes I have the latest LAN drivers installed.

The link speed is 100MBit however my router is pretty solid (Virgin Media Hub 3.0) and I'm using a cat6 wire so I don't know why it's only 100 and not 1Gbit.

I bought myself a new NIC and got myself a cat7 cable too - thanks for the help, I'll leave the thread open until I test it tomorrow.
