Buying 250GB SSD now then adding HDD later

Is buying a 250GB SSD now, (so i can install my OS and programs to boot) then buying a 2TB HDD next month for more permanent storage a good idea?

  • Will 250GB last me till next month?

Is it ok to only have an SSD?

    Should i buy a 500GB SSD instead?

Is NVME M.2 boot speed difference worth buying instead of normal SSD?

Solution
If it were me, I'd start with a 500GB SSD, unless I knew I'd be loading a limited number of programs.

I personally like the speed of my NVMe boot drive, but the SSD over HDD difference is a lot more meaningful than NVMe over SATA.
Make sure your motherboard's M.2 slot can take the type of drive you mean to buy. Most can use either, but some are limited to one or the other.

Thanks for the fast reply, and thanks for the information much appreciated.

You're welcome. I've used over half of the 512GB boot drive on my primary general-use PC, but then I've got another one for very limited purposes that has only a 128GB SSD boot drive. For general use then, I think you'd want the bigger one.

From a users perspective the speed difference between a SATA SSD and a PCIe (NVME) SSD is more or less invisible. So you'd be perfectly happy with either.

The answer is yes. You can add however many drives you want afterwards no problem. 250Gb can probably hold your OS and 1 or 2 new AAA games but that will fill it up to the brim which you want to avoid doing with SSDs.

If you can afford a 500Gb drive by stepping down to a SATA SSD model I would consider that a fair trade off.

1. Yes.
2. Absolutely. My system is SSD only, 5 drives
3. If you can, yes
4. Buying an NVMe just for a faster boot time is a waste of money.
