Intel DZ87KLT-75K - I can't get my sound card to work on the lowest 16x slot.

I have a 1x PCI-E sound card and I want to put in in the lowest (SLOT 1), 16x slot, which is for the 3rd graphics card (4x). When I had Asus board I used it for the sound card in 1x mode without any problems at all, I had such option in BIOS. Now after the upgrade it wouldn't boot giving me the graphics card error... I can't put the sound card anywhere else as I have a massive CPU cooler on top and the graphics card blocks the 1x slots.... Who designed it to leave PCI and Block PCI-E 1x by the graphics card...

Oh yeah, definitely, tried both. Doesn't work in a 2nd slot - the same error and the sound card is perfectly fine and does indeed work in a 1x slot and on the other motherboards. I fix the PC's for a living, so I have plenty of them around -)

My current solution to this problem is to put the graphics card to the 2nd slot and the sound card above it - it works fine this way, but I'm limiting my graphics card to 8X for no reason and have an empty 3rd slot which I'm sure could've been used for the sound card without any problem at all.

Per the manual its an x16 slot that is electrically x4. Its possible that the x16 slots are not designed to drop to x1 mode. You can check the BIOS to see if there is any options to change it but you said you did.

What GPU do you have that blocks three expansion slots?

What sound card do you have that is too wide to fit above the GPU?

Asus 1060 6gb OC edition blocks 2 slots below and Noctua 14 cooler blocks the PCI-1X above.
Asus Xonar Phoebus is the sound card. Every half decent Asus mobo supports 1x for the 16X 3rd slot. In fact any motherboard should. I don't know how to setup the bios to support it. I do know that on this board the PCI lanes allocated automatically, but my problem is that the mobo thinks that the sound card is the graphics card and won't boot. I wonder if there is any solution via bios to sort out this issue. "Extreme" motherboard, but no support for such basic functionality.

Damn I have a Strix 1080 and its not even that fat. Looking at the card it looks like a dual slot GPU.

The sound card is a single slot so it should fit above but I guess it really depends on the heatsink you have.

You could try a BIOS update. I have no experience with Intel boards, I only buy Asus.

I've got this board for free with the corrupt bios chip and replaced it myself. So I can't complain. I was to buy a board it would've been Asus for sure. The bios has been updated already. There are some setting in the bios in regards to each slot and all the USB ports can be blocked for example. I wonder if anyone could assist with that. The bios is a total rubbish compared to the Asus one. This is the last intel motherboard, so we won't see them anymore.

Intel has ended their board line yes. They made good quality boards just not a good BIOS. What settings for the lanes do you have?

Now that you say it had a bad chip it might not have been the only thing bad. There is only two things I can think of. Either the lanes also have issues or the boards BIOS does not support dropping those slots to PCIe x1. Although ti should as any size should work in a x16 slot.

The board has been fully tested and has no issues. It was a brand new board with the corrupted bios, which is apparently pretty common for the Intel boards. I like the idea of 2 gigabit ports and good fan controls. Also the USB3 at the back is a fake -) they work via the HUB and windows 7 doesn't see them as USB3, also I haven't tested the speed yet. But only the front USB3 is controlled via chipset and without any kind of a HUB.

May be someone was able to configure the bios in a decent way. My understanding is that something in the BIOS can adjust that, but so far I was unsuccessful.
