I think before all is said and done you'll need access to both, assuming your undergrad coursework exposes you to a broad computing environment. But which you should have for your 'daily user' might depend on which computing platform you will ultimately work in, and will therefore wish to focus on.
But then again, most schools provide guidance on computing resource requirements specific to your field of study. Did you check with them? Try to find out your department freshman counselor is and email them with this question.
