Two 3TB Toshiba Canvios connected at the same time creates problems

Windows 7, 2 times 3TB Toshiba Canvio external drives create problems.

First, the second drive will not be online until I ask disk manager to bring it online because the disk ID is identical to first drive.

Second, with both drives online, the currently active one (copying or reading) will make loud clicking noises, like a camera shutter.

Unplugging one drive (from a USB hub) will stop all issues.

Does anyone know how to overcome this problem? So that I can have both drives attached to my laptop?

Question from peter.s.strempel : "Connecting 2 Toshiba 3TB Canvios at the same time"

Portable drives ?
Non powered hub ?

If so then it's a usb power issue, these drives run 5 or 6w each, sub spec will be 5v 2a max which is 10w.

Those sounds are the drive heads clicking because there's not enough constant power being delivered.

Powered 7-port USB hub. Keyboard, mouse, two powered seagate drives, plus one of the Canvios. Yes, they work fine individually, when not plugged in together.

Already tried that (connecting directly to computer). I guess I have simply reached capacity. Not to worry. After backup file copy I won't need all mt external drives to be connected at once.

I'll nomintae this as the solution.
